A security vulnerability in PHP was identified that impacts some of Parallels products. The goal of this email is to make you aware of the situation.

• Situation

The PHP Group and the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) has issued a vulnerability alert on 3 May that PHP-CGI-based setups contain vulnerability when parsing query string parameters from .php files. You can find more information at the PHP website.

·         Impact

A remote unauthenticated attacker could obtain sensitive information, cause a denial of service condition or may be able to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the web server.

o   Parallels Operation Automation Shared Hosting and Parallels Operation Automation Shared Hosting NG modules (all versions)

o   Parallels Plesk Panel for Linux versions 9.0 - 9.2.3 might be vulnerable (Plesk team is working on an update)

A temporary patch for PHP installations does exist, and Parallels is working on incorporating this patch in our products as soon as possible.

As summer rolled around we found ourselves in the midst of server migrations and build outs of our existing datacenter space in SNA1 and LAX7 expanding each to near 90% capacity. Towards the end of summer we started planning for our first Internet Datacenter in the East coast which is chronicled in detail here http://blog.vpls.net/2011/11/01/journey-to-the-east/.  I've personally been so busy that I couldn't finish the second half of the story home but that story will be left to the individuals that I shared the experience with.

Our Bangkok, Thailand office escaped the major floods that ravaged Central Thailand and Bangkok although some employee's homes were not spared the devastation. With all disasters comes grief but we must always be thankful that the things most important to us i.e. family are safe and out of harms way. VPLS Thailand and VPLS Inc founders have started a fund to help employees stricken by the disaster.

We knew going into the 4th quarter that it was going to be a lot of work with the turn up of IAD1 complete we refocused our efforts to building out our new Northern California flag ship datacenter in Sacramento, CA - SMF1. What was supposed to be a small build out ended up taking over 2 weeks to prep and prepare as well as circuit delays pushing the grand opening date back further and further but on December 26th our first batch of servers were online and ready to be sold! In fact orders poured in shortly after news went out and we're riding another wave of momentum into 2012!

Overall it was a great year for VPLS Inc with record sales and earnings throughout as well many corporate initiatives for our employees in the United States and Thailand. Our annual Food Drive yielded 2 pallets of canned foods and other items for the Orange County Food Bank. As the departure date approached we changed our minds and decided to make this once in a life time journey to the East! Our team consisted of 5 people, Ted, Taka, Michael, Vince and myself. The journey began from our office in Orange, CA and the following route was proposed:

The trip would be over 3300 miles with the goal of seeing as much of the USA as possible in a single journey. We ended up taking the following route because of 3 major reasons:

• stop by Las Vegas, NV first!
• see the Colorado Rockies before a storm hits
• I-70 is better then taking the I-40 as the road becomes a standard highway in many parts

The journey we planned and followed looked like this covering over 2800 miles and taking over 60 hours of non stop driving.

We left Orange,CA at 12:00 midnight Sunday October 30th and made it to Las Vegas around 3:00AM. A few guys decided to play some cards at the M Resort to test their luck. We eventually made it out of Las Vegas and into St George, Utah where our road trip on I-70 really began. We ventured through Zion National Park and Dixie National Forest. The pictures below can't describe the natural beauty or Utah's canyons and forests.

Since we're a big Brocade / Foundry Networks shop we thought this was rather funny!

We eventually made it to Vail, Colorado then Denver at around 9:30PM local time. We decided to visit Denver Bronco's Mile Stadium after their crushing lost to the Detroit Lions. (Go 49ers!)

While looking for places to eat we decided to consult Adam Richman and his popular show Man vs Food. Duffy's Cherry Cricket came highly recommended for their world famous burgers and brew and it did not disappoint! Make sure you try the Green Chili and add an egg / green chile to your Cricket Burger!

After hours of driving through the night we passed through the entire state of Kansas ending up in Kansas City, MO. We stopped by the famous Midway Travel Plaza where the reality show is filmed. A couple hours later we ended up in St. Louis, MO and visited the famous Arc, gateway to the West, or in our case the East.

Since Man vs Food didn't disappoint in Colorado we tried our luck again visiting Pappy's Smokehouse. They ran out of chicken and beef so we ended up with ribs, pulled pork, turkey and a Fritto Pie. The meats were all dry but the Fritto Pie was awesome. Overall we weren't too impressed with Pappy's but then again they were about to close early for Halloween.

After leaving St Louis we headed to Indianapolis, IN and ate a late dinner at a surprising place called The Ball & Biscuit. We tried almost everything on the menu from crab cakes to a 1-lbs meatball, grilled cheese, gumbo and hot dogs. EVERYTHING was amazing!

Night time rolled around again and we were about 800 miles from our destination. Heavy fog slowed us down while crossing though Indiana and Ohio into West Virginia. We went through Morgantown, PA for a bit then back through the hills of West Virginia into Virginia. At 12:30 in the afternoon and over 60+ hours in the car we finally arrived at our new datacenter in Ashburn, Virginia!

Just wanted to quickly touch on a change we just deployed for http://vpls.net.  In the past to change the language of the site, you had to scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the flag related to the language you wanted.  Rather than force users to scroll to the bottom of the page, we now have built the language toggle into the top region of the site.

We made sure to carefully layout vital information related to servers, so it’s easy to find what you need the minute the page loads up. You are able to see the status of the server, if it has unpaid invoices, it’s ip address and more.

Further more, we made sure to make it easy for users to submit tickets and get in touch with support related to the server.

Invoice Details

Managing your invoices has never been easier with this system. We made sure to pull the information that most users look for and place it right at the top of the page. Paying an invoice is as simple as selecting whatever payment method you wish to use, and hitting pay. It couldn’t be easier.

Support

We wanted our ticketing system to be as simple and straight forward for users as much as possible, and we feel we have done that with My.Krypt’s new support system. With our old system, we found users were having difficultly getting the right help right away due to the ticket being thrown into the wrong department. That’s why we have simplified our departments, and made them large clickable buttons. Once a user selects the department, they can actually search for a server the ticket is related too, compared to our older system of scrolling through a dropdown menu.

Once the ticket has been submitted, you can see all the details for the ticket as plain as day. The top of the ticket lists out all information that may be important to you, such as ticket status, ticket id, queue and estimated reply time.

Following closely on the heels of VPLS.net and Krypt.com being translated, we have translated a majority of the content over at HiDefServers.com to Chinese.

Security researchers hack keyboard firmware

While most networking pros worry about firewalls and anti-malware software, a new keyboard hack promises to completely ignore all such protections. At the Black Hat and Defcon computer security conferences in Las Vegas, a hacker has demonstrated a hacked Apple keyboard that can log keystrokes and autonomously complete nefarious commands.

Apple keyboards have 8K of Flash memory along with 256 bytes of RAM. K.Chen managed to fit his code into this miniscule space and activates the software with a few taps of the return key. Since the software runs inside the keyboard, no batteries are required and the malware is undetectable from the operating system.

Chen included code in the PDF of his talk and the link is included at the end of the article. So what can you do with this hacked keyboard? Chen said you can disable keys, intentionally brick the keyboard and of course record the keystrokes to both flash (more than a 1000 keystrokes) and RAM (approximately a couple dozen keystrokes).

Chen showed off his hacked keyboard in the press room and Charlie Demerjian of Semi Accurate and George Ou of Digital Society managed to record a demonstration.

After being warned about a possible Trojan horse on the Defcon CD, a few malware analysts ripped through the CD contents looking for the file.  It was pretty amazing seeing the two guys work.  One used a Mac laptop while the other ran the PDF in a VMWare session.  They zeroed in on a few files and looked at the binary information along with the connections the file was trying to make.  In the end, both figured out that the trojan horse warning was just a false positive.  Crisis adverted.

Well that’s just great, the Defcon CD has a confirmed Trojan horse and everyone has been told to not view/use the files. I guess it shouldn’t come as any surprise that a hacking convention would have a hacked CD. The danger here is that there are federal agents and security professionals here with some serious information on their laptops.

We've been working hard getting Vault Mobi ready for launch, and today we are happy to announce the release of the BETA version!  The feature list is not very extensive, but this is just the beta!  I will go more into detail about what we are cooking up for Vault Mobile in a little bit, but let me start off by listing the features what you can do.

To start off, I think I will go ahead and introduce myself a little bit just so you know who you’re talking to here. My name is Chris Geiger and I am a software developer at VPLS Inc. I develop our internal systems for managing the thousands of servers we have in our datacenters. Many of my projects involve creating graphing tools and many other tools to help improve productivity for the employees here at VPLS. I started here at VPLS in 2007 and have watched an amazing company grow from a mom and pop company into a huge enterprise. When I first started we were only at a few hundred servers with one datacenter. Two years later and we’ve hit the multiple thousand mark with 4 datacenters!
